The Grill Brush Warning
Nobody Told You About

13 million wire grill brushes were recalled by the CPSC in spring 2026. A firefighter from South Florida saw this coming years ago and built something better. His price has not gone up since.

There is a good chance you have one in your garage right now. It came from Home Depot, or Lowe's, or Target. It cost somewhere between ten and thirty dollars, and you have used it dozens of times without thinking twice. Millions of Americans have the same one. And in spring 2026, the federal government told all of them to stop using it immediately.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of over 13 million wire-bristle grill brushes from several major brands. The reason: tiny metal bristles detach from the brush during normal use, stick to your grill grates or food, and can be swallowed without you ever knowing.

Most people are just now finding out. But one firefighter from South Florida had been trying to warn them for years.

She Thought It Was Cancer. It Was a Grill Brush.

Kathy is a woman from New York who grills regularly with her family. She ate a meal off their backyard grill, the same one they had used for years with the same routine. A week later, the pain started. She took ibuprofen. It would help, then come back worse.

"They thought it was a cancerous mass on my liver," she says. "It wasn't. It was two wire bristles from our grill brush."

Kathy, Wire Bristle Injury Survivor, New York
"The damage those bristles did to my intestines just kept reoccurring. My organs couldn't heal because of that foreign object being in me." "They had to go in three times. The first two were laparoscopic. The third time, they literally had to open me right up." "I was in the hospital for 15 days. My scars run from my breast to my groin. I still have nerve damage." "I never thought a grill brush would end my life."

The bristle is nearly invisible on an X-ray. Doctors can miss it for weeks. A 2026 medical study found that from 2015 through 2023 alone, wire grill brush bristles caused an estimated 3,739 emergency department visits. Nearly 24 percent of patients required hospital admission. Bristles have been documented lodging in throats, tearing through esophaguses, perforating stomach linings, puncturing intestines, and embedding in livers. They travel silently, and they do not stop.

Kathy's case was not unusual. It was not a fluke. It is happening at grills across America, at this moment, because most families still have no idea this is possible.

"Think of it like a knife as it travels through your digestive system. It can cut and slice anything open. Internal bleeding. Lodged in your liver, your kidneys, even your heart."

Scott Mobley, Lieutenant, Fire Service and Co-Founder, Grill Rescue

In the Fire Service, This Was Never a Secret

"In the fire service and in the medical community, swallowing metal bristles is nothing new. We've always known about this type of incident. EMTs run calls for this. The problem is that families never hear about it until they're in the ER."

"We know of a kid who went to the ER four separate times. Got X-rays, an MRI. They still couldn't find it. It took the fifth visit, five emergency room trips, to find a small metal fragment from a barbecue brush from eight weeks earlier."

"As a firefighter, I saw too many preventable injuries. That's what led us to create Grill Rescue."

Mobley started Grill Rescue in 2019 after noticing something that most people never think about: hot grill grates produce steam the moment water touches them. That steam does the actual cleaning work. The problem with every wire brush on the market was not just that it shed bristles. It was that the entire category had gotten the physics wrong. Mobley spent years developing a product built around steam as the active cleaning force, using aramid fiber, the same heat-resistant material woven into firefighters' protective gear, as the contact surface. No bristles. Nothing to detach. Nothing to shed into your food.

No bristles. No metal. No risk. Just steam from a hot grill and a material already trusted to protect human lives.

Grill Rescue. 60 Seconds.

No bristles. No soaking. No scrubbing.

  • 1
Heat your grill to 400-600 degrees F, the temperature you would normally be cooking at anyway.
  • 2
Dip Grill Rescue in water. The aramid fiber pad absorbs it in seconds.
  • 3
Press it onto the hot grates. The water instantly turns to steam, lifting grease and carbon off the grates without any scrubbing.
  • 4
Done in 60 seconds. Snap the head off and put it in the dishwasher. It locks solid during use and releases cleanly when you want it to.

The cleaning head is made of the same aramid fiber used in firefighting gear, specifically chosen because it handles extreme heat and resists breakdown. It works on porcelain, cast iron, stainless steel, and chrome grates. Dishwasher safe. Replaceable heads. And it has the patents to prove it came first.

Is Your Grill Brush on the List?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of over 13 million metal wire-bristle grill brushes from several major brands in spring 2026. The brushes were sold at major retailers including Lowe's, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Target, and Amazon over the past 15 years.

If you bought a wire-bristle grill brush at a major retailer in the last 15 years, there is a meaningful chance it is affected. The CPSC advises: stop using recalled brushes immediately.

We asked Kathy, who went through three surgeries and 15 days in a hospital, what she would tell other families who are still using wire brushes.

"These bristles are falling off and consumers are completely unaware they're possibly falling onto the meat. I had no warning. None. Don't use these. There are better options. This is preventable."

Kathy, New York

She threw out every wire brush in her house. Her whole family did.

"The fact that it's made by a firefighter makes me feel safer," she says. "If my story could help one person, it would be well worth it."

About the Price
Everything Has Gotten More Expensive.
Grill Rescue Has Not.

Gas prices up. Groceries up. Hardware up. Everything costs more than it did three years ago, and most companies have used inflation as cover to quietly raise prices.

Grill Rescue made a different decision. Their price has never been raised. Not once. Not when materials got more expensive. Not when shipping costs spiked. Not now.

"Because this isn't just a product," Mobley says. "This is your family's safety. And we refuse to make protecting them cost more just because everything else does."
